I knew in my heart that we were going to die. Even as he held me close I was positive that there was no way out of this. We were huddled closely in a deep snow bank trying not to move… trying not to make a sound. If we did the hunter would surely hear us.

I had never imagined that this is how it would end for me; but, in all honesty, I had not imagined any of the things that had happened to me in the past few weeks. Life had seemed like a surreal dream, but I was in for a rude awakening.

I had learned at an early age good things never lasted long.

The only sense of peace was knowing that Alice was safe. She was not out here in this storm. She was protected in the police station with Adam… Even if I didn’t survive she would live on. Though thinking of my only daughter alone in the world was not something I wanted to consider.

But there was no choice; it was our lives or hers. And as I looked into the eyes of the only man I ever loved I knew he was well aware of that too. There was nothing left to do but wait for the end to come, and by the sound of the crunching footsteps just down the street it was coming soon.
